Mobile Eftpos Terminals:
Are They Worth It?

A decade ago, "mobile eftpos" meant lugging around a chunky terminal with a SIM card that dropped out every second job. Today, it covers everything from sleek 4G smart terminals that fit in a back pocket, to Bluetooth readers that pair with your phone, to tap-to-pay built straight into a phone with no extra hardware at all.

If you're a tradie, mobile beautician, market stall, food truck, event business or anyone who takes payment somewhere other than a fixed counter, the right mobile eftpos terminal can be the difference between getting paid on the spot and chasing an invoice for three weeks. Here's how the options actually stack up.

The Four Types of "Mobile" Payment in Australia

The phrase "mobile eftpos" gets thrown around for very different products. Sorting them into categories first makes the buying decision simpler.

1. Standalone 4G Smart Terminal

A self-contained terminal — usually Android-based — with its own SIM card, screen, printer (sometimes), and battery. Looks like a smartphone with a chunky bottom. Works anywhere there's a phone signal. Doesn't need to be paired to anything else.

Best for: tradies, mobile vets, anyone working at customer sites where Wi-Fi isn't reliable.

2. Bluetooth Card Reader (paired with a phone or tablet)

A small puck-style reader that connects to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth. The actual transaction is processed through an app on your device. The reader itself just captures the card.

Best for: market stalls, pop-ups, low-volume businesses where you want a cheap entry-level setup.

3. Tap-to-Pay-on-Phone (no extra hardware)

The newest option. Your customer's contactless card or phone is tapped directly against the back of your iPhone or Android — no separate reader at all. Approved by Visa, Mastercard, and most Australian banks since around 2023, and now widely available.

Best for: solo tradies, mobile service providers, side hustles, anyone who wants to take a card payment without buying any hardware at all.

4. Portable Terminal Linked to a Fixed POS

A handheld terminal that's still tied to your shop or restaurant POS — used by waitstaff to take payment at the table, or by retail staff to ring up customers anywhere on the floor. Connects via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth back to the main system.

Best for: restaurants, cafes, larger retail. Not really "mobile" in the field sense — it's mobile within your premises.

Standalone 4G vs Tap-to-Pay-on-Phone: The Big Comparison

For most genuinely mobile businesses, the choice now comes down to a 4G smart terminal vs a tap-to-pay-on-phone setup. Both work. Each has trade-offs.

Where a 4G terminal wins:

Where tap-to-pay-on-phone wins:

The honest answer: if you do five card payments a week, tap-to-pay-on-phone is fine. If you're doing twenty or more, the maths usually tips back toward a proper 4G terminal because the per-transaction rate matters more than the hardware cost.

What About Coverage?

Mobile eftpos lives or dies on signal. Most modern 4G terminals will fall back to 3G or use Wi-Fi if 4G drops, but if you regularly work in basements, regional black spots or large industrial sites, ask the provider:

If you're in a tradie or rural-services business, this matters more than the rate. A 0.1% saving doesn't help if the terminal won't connect at the customer's house.

The Hidden Costs to Watch For

Mobile Eftpos and Same-Day Settlement

Mobile-first businesses live or die on cash flow. Getting paid on Friday for a Monday job is normal. Getting paid same-day for that Monday job is much better. Most modern mobile eftpos providers now offer same-day or instant settlement, but it's not always the default — sometimes you have to ask, and sometimes there's a small fee for it.
