Pubs and bars are a unique beast. Fast-paced service, high drink volumes, tab management, split bills, gaming areas, bistro meals, and a Friday night crowd that does not want to wait. The eftpos setup that works for a boutique café is going to fall apart in a busy public bar. If you are running a pub in Australia, here is what to actually look for when choosing your payment solution.
Speed Is Everything Behind the Bar
When the bar is three-deep and the footy is on, every second matters. A slow terminal means longer queues, frustrated customers, and lost sales. The difference between a terminal that takes 2 seconds and one that takes 8 seconds does not sound like much — until you multiply it across 400 transactions a night.
Modern eftpos terminals from providers like Tyro, Zeller, and the major banks have come a long way on speed. But the difference between them can still be significant, especially on 4G-connected portable terminals. A good broker will know which providers are consistently fast and which ones still lag.
Tab Management and Open Orders
Pubs that run tabs need eftpos that plays nicely with tab functionality in the POS. Customers start a tab, order a few rounds, and settle up at the end of the night. If the eftpos and POS do not talk to each other properly, tab reconciliation becomes a nightmare.
Look for an integrated setup where the POS holds the tab and only hits the terminal once at the end. This keeps the front-of-house workflow clean and means fewer disputes about what was ordered and when.
Portable Terminals for Bistro Service
If your venue has a bistro or dining area, table service is standard. Staff need portable 4G or Wi-Fi terminals they can carry to the table. Nobody wants to ask a table of eight to walk up to the counter to pay.
When we compare eftpos for pubs, we check battery life, coverage, durability, and how well the terminal handles moving between Wi-Fi zones. A portable terminal that cuts out in the beer garden is useless.
Gaming and TITO Compatibility
Pubs with gaming areas often need eftpos that integrates with TITO systems, EGM reconciliation, and compliance reporting. Not every provider supports this, and it is not something you want to discover after you have signed a three-year contract.
If your venue has gaming, tell your broker upfront. It narrows the provider shortlist considerably and ensures the setup meets your state regulator's requirements.
Surcharging in Hospitality
Most pubs now use surcharging (sometimes called free eftpos) to pass the processing fee to the customer. It is accepted practice in Australian pubs and customers rarely object. The upside is that your processing costs effectively drop to zero.
Not every pub owner wants to surcharge — some see it as chipping away at the venue experience. Either way, knowing both models side by side for your specific transaction volume is the first step.
Settlement Speed and Cash Flow
Pubs carry significant daily cash flow pressure — wages, keg deliveries, gaming payouts, suppliers. Waiting three days for Friday night's takings to settle can make Monday morning tight. Same-day settlement is available through several providers we work with and can make a real difference to how you manage cash.
Mistakes Pub Owners Make
After working with licensed venues around the country, here are the common traps:
- Signing with the bank by default. Your bank is rarely the sharpest deal for a high-volume venue. Independent providers usually win on both rate and features.
- Ignoring integration. A standalone terminal might seem simple, but the reconciliation headache and tab disputes add up.
- Locking into long contracts. Multi-year lock-ins with exit fees are still common. We always push for flexibility.
- Not earning perks. High-volume pubs can rack up serious Qantas Points or cashback on processing.
